Christer Bothén is both a visual artist and a musician, with the intractable European bass clarinet as his main instrument. But he is also a traveler. During long periods, he lived in Marocco, studying different musical traditions. Among other things, he has learned to play the doso´n koni and the guinbri, two traditional string instruments.
And this is something that has left deep traces on his music through the years, whether it has been heavily electrified, like with Bolon Bata and Bolon X, or mostly acoustic, like with his new group, Acoustic Ensemble. In this group four musicians appear who otherwise are mostly seen in freeform circles: vibraphonist Kjell Nordesson, bassist Johan Berthling, guitarist David Stackenäs, and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love.
Christer Bothén’s music is also inspired by the saxophonist Ornette Coleman’s musical concept harmolodics, and contains many parallel lines that do not at first glance fit together. But that is a false picture. Instead, one can say that Christer Bothén has never before written such well-composed music—even though there is plenty of space for improvisations. In parts, Bothén’s music, with its complex structure, abrupt turns, and many shifts, can be likened to the music that Frank Zappa refined. In all, Bothén has on ”7 pieces ” put together an extremely exciting trip around the world, with many levels! — Johan Scherwin
